
Chicks, Kicks & Glory dreams from kickboxing girls
In large cities Kickboxing is becoming an increasingly popular sport among girls. Many girls with a Moroccan background are practising Kickboxing and other heavy martial arts.
Kosmopolis Rotterdam presents along with FAT and Imagine IC: Chicks, Kicks & Glory.
Chicks, Kicks & Glory consists of two parts:
Exhibition comic drawings
A series of comic books, in which for the first time in the Dutch comic history Moslimas play a key role. They tell how they deal with femininity, physicality, discipline, religion and integration. The exhibition shows a variety of styles. The visitor can also listen to interviews with girls who are taken in the locker rooms of boxing schools. It is also a film is shown with the boxing biography of multiple world champion Negadi Amina. The comic drawings are created by: Peter Pontiac, Maaike Hearts, Mike Cook, Farida Laan, Sandra de Haan and Cristina Henrike Richarte & Olasolo.
Dance Performance
The stories about kickboksende girls serve as inspiration for a multimedia dance performance. Choreographer Susanne Marx develops a dance where the stories of the girls are depicted in modern dance, classical dance and street dance, mixed with kickboksmoves. The version is danced by Soumia kickbokskampioene Abalhaja, professional performer and dancer Thomas Falk kickboksende and a group of girls from different sources. The decor of the performance, consisting of video projections, is provided by videographer Susanna Brenner, who through personal portraits an authentic story told. Gary Shepherd, DJ Alec Smart, developed with its own Visual sound and tight beats the soundscape for the performance .
In large cities Kickboxing is becoming an increasingly popular sport among girls. Strikingly, many girls with a Moroccan background do Kickboxing and other martial arts. They are proud of their discipline and their bruises. This is contrary to the existing image that many people have about femininity in the Moroccan culture and about Islamic religious rules. Susanne Marx is intrigued by the motivation of the girls of the Kickboxing and is curious as to their identity as a woman, in proportion to their trainer-a man in this case.
